North American Irish Dance Championships
Many dancers are preparing to head off to Providence in two weeks for An Comisiun's North Americans. However, you don't have to live in North America to attend; the competition is open to anyone! Boys and girls from overseas will also be coming, to see how well they can do on this part of the globe. Over the past few years, the competition has had such high attendance that almost every age has had to be split into two parts: group A (January to June birthdays) and group B (July to December birthdays). Every year the dancers come with harder steps and faster routines, all in hopes of being in the top half: the recall. If you've ever been to a North American's, you would know; the announcing of the recalls is the most heartbreaking part. Some dancers train all year for this moment, to see if the judges thought they were worthy of a medal. After the recalls are announced, those who made the cut do a third round: a set. Each set is catered to the dancer's strengths and shows off their coolest tricks and rhythms. After the sets are finished and the results are calculated, the awards are announced. If possible, you should not miss the opening ceremonies! They like to do it big, a great way to start of the week. There has been anything from hand-dancing to the youtube-famous group, Taptronic performing at the opening ceremonies. Once the festivities are over, they call all the dancers backstage. Being a dancer, this is the most nerve-racking part. The top ten is called out on stage, and if you didn't make the top ten, you're left waiting backstage with fifty other dancers, all hoping it's not their number called next.
These dancers train so hard all year for just this one day, their one moment up on that stage. Once it's all over, they have time to enjoy the amazing places they get to travel to! We have found things to do and places to see in providence to get you started.
